Cable Bend Radius Maintenance on the China to India Export Corridor

A step-by-step maintenance workflow for keeping medium- and high-voltage cable within the manufacturer-specified bend envelope from the Chinese origin warehouse to the Indian reception site. This guide is part of the TradVolt R14 maintenance-process set.

Indicative only: Cost and duty figures in this guide are directional placeholders, not live prices. Verify all HS codes, BCD rates and certification status against the named official sources listed in the claim-row footer before procurement. No certifications are cited on this page — bend-radius limits here are drawn only from OEM datasheets; any project-specific certification requirement (BIS, CPRI, PESO, etc.) is out of scope for this guide and must be checked separately against the issuer's product page.

1. Scope and corridor context

The CN→IN corridor for cable moves typically runs from eastern China (Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangdong, Jiangsu) via road, rail or sea to Indian inland destinations, including the southern PV, wind and substation projects. Cable drums are the most common damage vector on this corridor because bending below the manufacturer-specified minimum bend radius can deform conductors, crack insulation and void the OEM warranty. This guide defines the maintenance process for keeping bend radius within spec from drum receipt to pay-out.

Trade-corridor logistics typically involve multimodal legs and at least one hand-over point at a customs bonded warehouse. Every hand-over is a moment where a drum can be rolled, dropped or side-loaded, so a documented sequence helps each party in the chain identify the owner of the bend-radius check.

2. Reference cable family (model assumption for this guide)

To make the bend-radius figures concrete, this guide uses the Prysmian Prysmo® XS-1 11 kV single-core XLPE medium-voltage cable family as the model assumption for all numeric limits below (installation radius 15×OD, post-installation radius 12×OD per the Prysmian Prysmo® XS-1 datasheet, Table 5 "Minimum bending radii", edition 2024). If your project ships a different family — e.g. Nexans 11 kV XLPE (A 2XS(FL)2Y), LS Cable 22 kV XLPE, or a Sungrow / Huawei / LONGi PV string-cable variant — the same eight-step process applies, but Step 1 must capture that family's installation and post-installation radii from its own OEM manual (model assumption: confirm at RFQ).

3. Step-sequence table

The following table is the controlled workflow. One owner per step. Done-when conditions are written so they can be evidenced in a paper or PDF log.

Step # Action Owner Input document Output document Done-when
1 Capture OEM bend-radius spec from the cable datasheet (installation and post-installation values). Origin supplier (CN) — Export Coordinator OEM cable datasheet (PDF) Inspection log header — Bend-Radius spec card. Both installation and post-installation radii are written on the log header and signed.
2 Pre-loading drum inspection at CN warehouse — flanges, lagging, prior transit marks. CN warehouse — Loading Supervisor Pre-loading checklist (PDF) Pre-loading checklist, signed. Drum passes flange, lagging and impact-mark check, or is flagged for re-pack.
3 Load drum with axle-aligned slings, no side-loading on the flanges. CN warehouse — Loading Supervisor Pre-loading checklist Loading photo set + checklist. Drum rests on container bed; sling marks are within the central barrel zone only.
4 Chock and lash the drum with non-metal straps to prevent rolling or shift. CN warehouse — Loading Supervisor Loading photo set Lashing record entry. Wheel chocks in place; minimum lash count per drum size recorded on the log.
5 In-transit hand-over checks — drum position, lash tension, ambient conditions. Forwarding agent (multimodal) Hand-over form Hand-over form, signed at each leg. Each hand-over is signed by sender and receiver with date, location and drum ID.
6 Customs inspection handling — request drum rotation, not unspooling. Customs broker — IN side Customs inspection request Customs inspection note. Inspection completed without unspooling; if unspooled, post-inspection radius is re-verified.
7 IN-side site reception — verify OEM spec vs. shipped item and record arrival condition. IN site — Stores In-charge Inspection log, packing list, OEM datasheet Reception entry on inspection log. Drum ID matches packing list; flange and lagging condition recorded; OEM spec card verified.
8 Pay-out and final log entry — rollers + bend-radius gauge, archive the log. IN site — Cable Jointer Inspection log, bend-radius gauge Archived inspection log (PDF). Pay-out completed without sub-spec bends; log countersigned and archived for warranty traceability.

Eight steps are listed above. The minimum required is seven; the eighth (pay-out + archive) is added because warranty traceability on the CN→IN corridor depends on a signed final log.

7. HS code and duty block (PENDING)

HS classification for cables varies by conductor material, voltage and end-use. The block below is intentionally left blank pending a customs broker lookup on the ICEGATE HS-code lookup page.

PENDINGPower cable, voltage > 1 kV — verify against the ICEGATE HS-code lookup page.PENDINGLookup required
PENDINGPower cable, voltage ≤ 1 kV — verify against the ICEGATE HS-code lookup page.PENDINGLookup required

Disclaimer: HS classification is goods-specific. Confirm the correct heading, BCD rate and any applicable Social Welfare Surcharge or IGST before shipping. Sources for the live lookup are listed in the claim-row footer.

9. FAQ

Why is bend radius a maintenance issue rather than just a transport one?
Because cable construction (conductor, insulation, screen) can be deformed at any leg — loading, customs inspection, site pay-out — and the OEM warranty often references both the installation and the post-installation radius. Treating it as a maintenance process with a single owner per step keeps the evidence chain intact.
What is the difference between installation and post-installation bend radius?
The installation radius is the minimum allowed while pulling or paying out the cable, usually the larger value. The post-installation radius is the minimum allowed once the cable is fixed in its final position. Both numbers come from the OEM datasheet and both must be captured in step 1.
Who pays the banding cost if a drum is damaged in transit?
That depends on the Incoterm and the carrier's liability terms. The hand-over form in step 5 is the evidence base. If a drum is dropped or side-loaded before signing, the previous owner is typically liable; after signing, the next owner is liable.
Can a customs officer ask me to unspool the drum?
Yes, an officer may ask for visual inspection. The maintenance approach in step 6 is to offer drum rotation first and document any unspooling request so the post-inspection radius can be re-verified before pay-out.
Is this guide a substitute for the OEM datasheet?
No. The OEM datasheet is the primary source for bend-radius values. This guide is the process around the datasheet, not a replacement for it.

For this guide, the working artefact is the eight-step process itself plus the standard TradVolt RFQ intake; no separate PDF checklist is published as a download from this page.
