Module Microcrack Check for the China → Latin America Corridor

Buyer-side, step-by-step procedure for catching microcracks before, during, and after a PV module shipment from a Chinese OEM to a LATAM port and onward inland haul. Targeted equipment: Jinko Tiger Neo 3.0 N-type TOPCon (JKM650-670N-66QL6-BDV series), Trina Solar Vertex N+ i-TOPCon, and LONGi Hi-MO 9 (HPBC 2.0 back-contact). Built for EPCs, IPPs, and traders who need a defensible chain of evidence from factory gate to project site.

Answer-first verdict

Run this 8-step workflow on every CN→LATAM crystalline-Si lot covering the Jinko Tiger Neo 3.0 N-type TOPCon, Trina Vertex N+ i-TOPCon, or LONGi Hi-MO 9 HPBC 2.0 family; budget QA as indicative only and reconfirm every line against current surveyor and OEM quotes; no fixed prices are published. Model assumption: torque, SOC, and voltage limits are taken from each OEM's current datasheet revision (Jinko JKM650-670N-66QL6-BDV-F1 datasheet, Trina Vertex N+ product page, LONGi Hi-MO 9 product page) and must be re-pulled at quote time.

Why microcracks matter on the CN→LATAM corridor

Crystalline-silicon PV modules are mechanically fragile goods. The China to Latin America trade line, modelled against the multimodal carriage provisions of Incoterms 2020 (CIF / CIP / DAP), typically involves inland truck in China, port handling at the CN origin port, sea crossing with one or more transhipment hubs, port handling at the LATAM discharge port, and finally a road haul to the project site. Each leg is a chance for vibration, point loading, or impact to introduce cell-level microcracks that are invisible at goods-in but degrade output over years of field service.

Microcracks are not always a manufacturing defect: many are induced in transit or during on-site racking. The trader's risk is that, without a documented chain of evidence, a crack found at commissioning is impossible to attribute to either the OEM or the carrier, and the claim falls on whoever is least defended on paper. Per the IEA and the latest edition of the International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaic (ITRPV) cell-technology section, the cell technologies to triage on this corridor are mono PERC, TOPCon, HJT, and back-contact (BC) crystalline silicon — exactly the families the named target models below cover.

Target module models (named because their current datasheets and warranty annexes are public): Jinko Tiger Neo 3.0 N-type TOPCon (JKM650-670N-66QL6-BDV series, STC 650-670 Wp, 24.06-24.80% efficiency, Vmp ≈ 43.09 V, Voc ≈ 50.98 V on 670 W variant; datasheet PDF linked in sources), Trina Solar Vertex N+ i-TOPCon (Vertex N+ product page), and LONGi Hi-MO 9 (HPBC 2.0 back-contact) (up to 670 W, up to 24.8% efficiency, bifaciality up to 80%). Any torque, SOC, or system-voltage limit used in the QA or claim pack must be reconciled against the OEM's current datasheet revision at RFQ time.

Note on scope. This guide is buyer-side process, not an OEM factory procedure. It does not replace the OEM's own factory inspection; it complements it. No certificate or standard listed below is endorsed by TradVolt — buyers must verify each item against the issuing body's current publication and against the OEM's current datasheet and warranty annex.

FAQ

What counts as a "microcrack" under this guide?

A microcrack is a sub-millimetre to a few-millimetre fracture in a crystalline-Si cell that is not reliably visible without electroluminescence or comparable imaging per IEC TS 60904-13 (full designation IEC TS 60904-13, edition in force; cite via the IEC Webstore catalogue). It can be latent at goods-in and grow into a hot spot or a power-loss zone after months of thermal cycling in the field.

Is EL imaging mandatory at the LATAM port?

Not on every lot, but it is the most reliable way to catch what visual inspection misses. The decision rule in step 6 says: if visual sample indicates any pattern of concern (e.g. clustering on one pallet or one leg), the lot escalates to an EL re-check per IEC TS 60904-13.

Who pays for the EL re-check when the lot is clean?

That depends on the Incoterms 2020 rule on the PO and on the OEM warranty annex for the named family (Jinko Tiger Neo 3.0 / Trina Vertex N+ / LONGi Hi-MO 9). TradVolt's default position is that the QA cost is the buyer's, unless the EL re-check reveals cracks that breach the OEM's published acceptance threshold, in which case the cost shifts to the OEM or the carrier as per the claim pack.

Does this guide apply to thin-film modules?

No. The tier scale and the corridor triage assume crystalline-silicon cells (Jinko Tiger Neo 3.0 N-type TOPCon, Trina Vertex N+ i-TOPCon, LONGi Hi-MO 9 HPBC 2.0). Thin-film modules have different failure modes and require a different imaging rubric.

Can I skip step 8 (risk register update)?

No. Step 8 is what turns a one-off claim into a better next shipment. Without it, the same crack pattern will repeat on the next CN→LATAM lot and the buyer's exposure stays unchanged.
