Module Clamp Check (R14) - CN to ZA Corridor Maintenance Process

Document type: Maintenance / process guide  |  Status: Master under editorial review  |  Audience: Site O&M contractors, EPC quality teams, project owners.

1. Scope and applicability

This guide describes a maintenance workflow for the periodic module-clamp inspection (revision R14) applied to solar assets whose modules and clamps were sourced from manufacturers in China and installed in the Republic of South Africa. The R14 reference is the internal TradVolt revision label for this maintenance routine and is not a regulator-issued standard. Where the workflow references torque values, bolt grades, or seating depths, the site team must cross-check against the original module and clamp OEM datasheets supplied with the bill of lading at delivery.

The guide is intended for arrays using framed crystalline-silicon modules clamped to aluminium rails with bolt-driven end and mid clamps. It does not cover frameless / glass-glass laminates bonded with structural adhesive, nor ballasted flat-roof systems without mechanical fasteners.

Editorial note: torque values shown in the OEM datasheets are the only authoritative figures. If a datasheet is missing on site, the O&M contractor must request it from the EPC or importer before re-torquing.

2. Step-sequence process

The table below lists the maintenance sequence. Each step carries one named owner and an explicit done-when condition. Owners shown are role labels; substitute equivalent site titles where the role name differs.

Step #ActionOwnerInput docOutput docDone-when
1 Pre-visit preparation: confirm site access, weather window, and prior maintenance log review. O&M Coordinator Prior clamp torque log; site access form. Pre-visit checklist (filled). Visit window confirmed and prior log retrieved from the archive.
2 PPE and tool calibration check; verify torque-wrench calibration certificate. Site Supervisor Torque-wrench calibration certificate. PPE and tool sign-off sheet. Wrench in-calibration and tool-kit content matches kit.
3 Visual inspection of every clamp and bolt in the sample string. Maintenance Technician Module clamp datasheet; string layout drawing. Visual inspection sheet. Every clamp in the sample visually graded A/B/C and photographed.
4 Re-torque verification on a sample of existing clamps using a calibrated wrench. Maintenance Technician OEM torque specification sheet. Re-torque log (sample). Recorded torque within OEM tolerance and paint-mark continuity verified.
5 Gap and seating measurement: feeler-gauge at module-to-rail interface, clamp engagement depth measured. Maintenance Technician OEM datasheet (clamp section). Gap measurement sheet. Seating depth and gap within OEM-specified range for each clamp measured.
6 Replace deficient clamps / bolts, apply fresh torque marker, log replacement. Maintenance Technician Spare clamp kit; replacement log template. Replacement log entry + photos. All C-graded clamps replaced and torque-marked.
7 Documentation compilation: torque log, photos, serial-number cross-reference with bill of lading. Documentation Officer Bill of lading; module serial list; torque log. Maintenance pack (PDF + native). Every sampled serial number reconciled with the B/L file.
8 Handover and report filing with the site owner / O&M contractor. O&M Coordinator Maintenance pack (PDF + native). Signed handover receipt. Site owner / O&M contractor countersigns the handover receipt.

3. Document checklist

The following filenames are required to complete the maintenance handover. Each filename is a literal value used in the maintenance pack index.

5. Indicative cost slots

Cost slots below are labelled indicative; TradVolt does not publish hard prices for O&M services. Final figures must be obtained from the contracted O&M provider. Any figure left as UNCERTAIN indicates an unsourced slot that the buyer must verify with the contractor.

6. HS code & duty block

Duty and tariff treatment below is provided as a lookup pointer, not a binding rate. Rates are marked PENDING until the buyer confirms with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the original CN-side commercial invoice. TradVolt is not a licensed customs broker.

7. Frequently asked questions

What is the R14 label?
R14 is the TradVolt internal revision label for this module-clamp maintenance routine. It is not a regulator-issued standard.
Which torque values apply?
Only the OEM datasheet values supplied with the module and clamp at delivery. Never apply a generic torque without confirming against the datasheet.
How often should the clamp check be repeated?
The interval depends on the OEM recommendation, the site environment (coastal, dusty, high-wind), and the EPC handover document. TradVolt does not publish a fixed interval.
Do I need a special torque wrench?
Yes. Use a calibrated torque wrench whose range covers the OEM-specified value and whose calibration certificate is in date.
Can this guide be used for ballasted or adhesive-mounted modules?
No. The R14 routine is written for bolt-driven clamps on aluminium rails. Ballasted and adhesive-mounted arrays need a different procedure.
