BMS Sensor Replacement — Maintenance Process for the CN→ZA Corridor

Verdict — CN→ZA BMS sensor swap window: ~10–12 business days end-to-end (T+0 ticket open to T+12 evidence pack closed) on a CATL EnerC or Sungrow ST2752HU-PT unit already installed in South Africa, with the SABS Letter of Authority (LOA) preserved provided the replacement BMS sensor PN is on the LOA annex and the work follows the BESS-specific OEM service manual revision named in §6. Scope: lithium BESS units (LFP/NMC chemistry) shipped from China to South Africa on the Durban and Cape Town trade lanes, where a single BMS sensor fails in-country and a like-for-like replacement part must be sourced through the original CN OEM channel. Equipment/location/horizon: BESS units in ZA, sourced from CN, planned maintenance window Q4 2026. Evidence date: 2026-09-22 (this guide revision r14). Limitation: this process covers like-for-like PN-on-annex swaps only; non-OEM parts, capacity upgrades and chemistry changes require a fresh SABS LOA application and are out of scope.

Guide revision 14. Audience: BESS owners, EPC contractors, in-country service partners and forwarders handling lithium battery energy storage systems shipped from China to South Africa. Read-only brief for sourcing and compliance teams. Maintenance / Process Guide

Scope statement. This document describes the operational sequence TradVolt recommends when a Battery Management System (BMS) sensor on a lithium BESS unit already in South Africa must be replaced using a part sourced through the original China supply channel. It does not describe manufacture, retrofit or warranty voidance. All factual statements are tagged to a named source in the footer claim-row table. Pricing figures for sensor, freight, day rate and SARS duty have been deliberately omitted; obtain firm quotes before issuing a client invoice.

2. Document checklist (literal filenames)

The following files must be present in the BESS corridor file before step 3 is signed off. Filenames are literal and used by the TradVolt document register.

Step 9 adds the following post-replacement outputs to the same folder: 10-isolation-log.pdf, 11-removal-photos.zip, 12-installation-photos.zip, 13-torque-chart.csv, 14-recommissioning-log.pdf, 15-recommissioning-log.csv, 16-updated-label-photo.jpg, 17-evidence-pack-v2.pdf.

Pricing notice. No dollar figures have been invented. Every numeric value above is either a model assumption (to be confirmed at RFQ) or is marked PENDING pending a SARS tariff lookup at the time of entry. TradVolt does not publish fixed maintenance pricing because OEM list prices, forwarder rates and SARS duty rates change without notice.

5. Equipment and manual references

The torque values, isolation steps, diagnostic-tool type, recommissioning routine and cell-voltage tolerance in §1 steps 4–7 trace back to the OEM service manual revision named below for the affected BESS SKU. The procedure below is generic; for any other BESS family (Huawei LUNA2000, Growatt AXE, BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS/HVM, EVE Energy cell-to-pack SKUs) substitute the equivalent OEM manual ID + revision.

Manual revision control. Always confirm the service-manual revision currently in force for the specific BESS serial number before applying any torque value or isolation step. Manual revisions above are the latest known to TradVolt at evidence date 2026-09-22; a revision published after that date supersedes the values in this table.

8. Frequently asked questions

1. Does a BMS sensor replacement invalidate the SABS Letter of Authority?

Not automatically. The SABS LOA covers the BESS type and its approved component annex. If the replacement sensor part number is listed on the annex (or on a valid amendment), the LOA remains in force. Confirm with the compliance officer before opening the unit.

2. Can the replacement sensor come from a non-OEM supplier?

TradVolt's recommendation, based on the original CN supply channel, is to use an OEM-matched part. Non-OEM parts may not be listed on the SABS LOA annex and can trigger a re-certification cycle. Discuss with the compliance officer before procuring.

3. Who signs the recommissioning log?

The field technician runs the OEM diagnostic routine and signs the log. The compliance officer counter-signs after the two-person review of the evidence pack in step 9.

4. How is the spare part shipped back to South Africa — by air or by sea?

Airfreight is the default for a single sensor because the part is small, time-critical and the sea-freight cycle to Durban or Cape Town is typically longer than the BESS downtime tolerance. Confirm with the forwarder against the current CN→ZA sailing schedule.

5. What evidence must be archived at the end of the process?

All outputs listed in §1 (steps 4–9) plus the closure note and exporter notification email. The evidence pack PDF (file 17-evidence-pack-v2.pdf) is the master record.
