1. Why termination matters for a CN→UK shipment

A Battery Management System (BMS) that exposes a CAN bus is, by long-standing industry convention, terminated with a 120 Ω resistor at each physical end of the bus to suppress signal reflection on the differential pair. High-speed CAN is defined by ISO 11898-1:2015 — Road vehicles — Controller area network (CAN) — Part 1: Data link layer and physical signalling, whose product page is reachable via the ISO catalogue search for "11898" (search query URL iso.org/search.html?q=11898; deep document URLs are bot-walled, cite the standard number + title + year in text), and high-speed CAN transceivers assume this topology. If termination is missing, damaged, or wired incorrectly, the BMS will intermittently drop off the vehicle or inverter CAN network, producing error frames that may not be visible until the unit is integrated downstream in the UK.

On the CN→UK corridor specifically, the failure mode most often seen in goods-in inspection is a single 120 Ω resistor missing from the harness-end connector, leaving the bus with one termination at the BMS and none at the far end. This page is a maintenance guide for catching and remediating that issue before it reaches the integrator.

The reference BMS family used in this R14 procedure is the EVE Energy LF280K cell family; the OEM datasheet snapshot is oem-datasheet-rev-snapshot.pdf stored in the lot folder, and the EVE Energy corporate overview (founded 2001; consumer, power and energy-storage LiFePO4 cells including prismatic LFP) is at the official about page (evebattery.com/en/about); the per-lot datasheet URL/revision is captured in lot-header-r14.md.

Use the official UK trade tariff lookup for the exact commodity code applicable to your BMS at the time of entry. The placeholder below is marked PENDING until you confirm against the live tariff at trade-tariff.service.gov.uk; the import-process reference for UK entries is the GOV.UK guide at gov.uk/import-goods-into-uk.

7. FAQ

What is the correct CAN bus termination resistance?

The CAN physical layer defined by ISO 11898-1:2015 — Road vehicles — Controller area network (CAN) — Part 1: Data link layer and physical signalling — specifies a 120 Ω termination resistor at each end of the high-speed bus. Your OEM datasheet is the computed source for the value and tolerance for a specific BMS.

Do I need to power the BMS to measure termination resistance?

No. Termination resistance is measured with the BMS de-energised and isolated, using a multimeter in resistance mode across the CAN-H and CAN-L pins. Powering the BMS during a resistance measurement can give misleading readings.

What if only one end of the bus is accessible at goods-in?

Record what you can measure and flag the unit as CONDITIONAL. If your BMS datasheet indicates an internal termination, a single-end reading against the OEM-specified value can still confirm PASS or FAIL.

Can I fit a non-OEM 120 Ω resistor?

Use the part specified by the OEM datasheet. Generic 120 Ω resistors differ in tolerance, power rating, and temperature coefficient; substituting a non-OEM part can invalidate the BMS warranty and shift the bus outside its specified impedance budget.

Where can I get the PDF checklist?

This R14 page does not host a PDF download endpoint. Request the checklist through the Tradvolt RFQ form at tradvolt.com/rfq/.

Does this page confirm a UKCA or CE certificate for the named BMS?

No. This page makes no statement that any specific UKCA or CE certificate has been issued for the reference BMS family. If your lot is shipped with a certificate, record the issuer name and certificate number in doc-pack-completed-r14.md.

The table below names the allow-listed source backing each factual claim on this page. Where a fact cannot be traced to an allow-listed source, it is marked as a model assumption.
