Maintenance Process Guide — BMS Voltage-Sense Calibration for CN→UK R14 Shipments

Verdict. This document is a tradvolt.com internal maintenance SOP — it is not a regulatory certification and does not replace UN 38.3 design-type testing or ADR packing certification. Indicative bench envelope: 10–14 h wall-clock across 2 working days (Day 0 intake + thermal rest overnight; Day 1 bench work + certificate). Indicative cost envelope: GBP 150–600 per pack for tradvolt labour only, exclusive of OEM service-tool licence fees and freight. Corridor: CN consolidation → EU port of entry → UK consignee (road, UN R14 / ADR). Equipment family covered: CATL CTP-style LFP packs with the CATL BMS-Master service tool (procedure limits drawn from CATL BMS Service-Tool Manual rev. 2.1, 2023-08; specific UV/OV thresholds, SOC window and torque values are model-dependent — see §1a). Evidence date: 2025-03 (regulatory framework as cited). Limitation: pack families other than CATL CTP require an analogous OEM service-tool reference — do not apply these limits to BYD Blade, EVE LF, Sungrow HV-box or Huawei LUNA packs without the matching OEM manual.

1. Scope and applicability

This guide covers periodic and pre-shipment maintenance of the BMS voltage-sense path on lithium-ion packs that will travel by road from a Chinese consolidation point to a UK consignee under the requirements applicable to UN R14 (lithium-ion batteries) carriage. corridor CN consolidation → EU port of entry → UK final mile.

Voltage-sense accuracy is a maintenance concern because cell-level voltage is the primary signal used to demonstrate that a pack is below the State of Charge threshold required for the applicable test (UN 38.3 T.7) and to confirm protection thresholds before transport. The maintenance procedure here is a tradvolt SOP, not a regulatory certification.

Parameters tagged "model assumption" depend on the exact CTP module variant (e.g. 228 Ah vs. 302 Ah) and the pack-specific datasheet revision — always verify against the datasheet shipped with the actual pack.

For BYD Blade packs use the BYD BMS Service Tool documentation; for EVE LF cells use the EVE cell specification; for Sungrow HV-box use Sungrow SBR / ST-series service manual; for Huawei LUNA2000 use Huawei FusionSolar service tool. Applying CATL limits to non-CATL packs is a documented misuse and will fail bench validation.

7. Frequently asked questions

Does a BMS voltage-sense calibration replace the UN 38.3 test?

No. UN 38.3 is a design-type test. A tradvolt calibration confirms the BMS can still resolve cell voltages accurately enough to support the pre-transport State-of-Charge check, but it does not replace or re-issue UN 38.3 evidence.

How often should this maintenance be performed?

Pre-shipment for every CN→UK R14 road move is the conservative default. For stationary packs, follow the OEM service interval — typically every 6 to 12 months for actively-cycled packs.

Which reference instrument is acceptable?

A 6½-digit DMM with a current, traceable calibration certificate from an accredited lab. The certificate serial and expiry are recorded at step 4.

What if a sense-harness test fails?

Stop the procedure. Replace or rework the harness, then re-run steps 3–6. The pack must not be staged for R14 transport with a failed harness record.

Is this guide a regulatory certification?

No. It is a tradvolt maintenance SOP that supports compliance evidence. Regulatory status is determined by the applicable UN / ADR / UK rules and by the OEM certifications on file.
