Fire-Detector Sensitivity Calibration: Maintenance & Process Workflow

Answer (R14): For CN→EU corridor fire-detector shipments, pre-shipment sensitivity verification on a typical Hochiki ESP Intelligent point-type smoke detector (e.g. ALN-EN(WHT), firmware ≥ v3.4) or a Hochiki ACB-EW heat detector requires (i) the OEM datasheet and commissioning manual pull, (ii) drift-compensation sampling per the OEM FPC AQL, (iii) EN 54-7:2018 / EN 54-5:2017+A1:2018 stimulus testing, and (iv) a consignment file with DoP + CE evidence retained for 10 years under CPR (EU 305/2011). Equipment: Hochiki ALN-EN series optical smoke detector (EN 54-7) and ACB-EW heat detector (EN 54-5). Location: CN production line → EU port. Horizon: pre-shipment (D-7 to D0) plus ≥10-year importer archive. Evidence date: 2026-09-22. Limitation: HS code for these detectors is pending verification — use the TARIC lookup path below before customs filing; rate not asserted.

Indicative content. This guide consolidates manufacturer and standards-body references; it is not a substitute for the OEM commissioning manual or the EN 54 series text held by your Notified Body. Always cross-check the latest revision of cited documents against the detector model and firmware on the actual shipment manifest.

1. Scope & applicability

This guide applies to point-type smoke and heat detectors carrying a Declaration of Performance (DoP) under the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR, EU 305/2011) and destined for fixed installation in EU/EEA buildings via the CN→EU corridor. It does not cover aspirating detectors, flame detectors, or addressable system design — those follow separate OEM and EN 54-20 / EN 54-10 procedures. The workflow assumes batch-level sampling on the production line in China, followed by pre-shipment document compilation for EU customs and the importer of record.

The maintenance lens is deliberate: detector sensitivity drifts over time as chamber optics foul and as analogue sensor elements age. OEM commissioning tools typically expose a "drift compensation" or "analogue value" reading that should be captured at the pre-shipment gate so the EU installer has a clean baseline. Where this reading sits outside the OEM's declared band, the unit should be quarantined, not shipped.

2. Standards & documentary anchors

3. Step-by-step maintenance process

Each step has a single named owner. The "Done-when" cell is the gate — do not advance until the criterion is satisfied and recorded. Equipment references below assume the illustrative Hochiki ALN-EN(WHT) optical smoke detector (EN 54-7) and Hochiki ACB-EW heat detector (EN 54-5, Class A2S); substitute the actual OEM model, firmware revision, and sensitivity class from your shipment manifest before production.

4. Document checklist (literal filenames)

Save the consignment file using these exact filenames. The convention keeps the corridor audit trail searchable across shipments and across Notified Body reviewers. Where the filename embeds a model placeholder, replace <model> with the actual OEM model and RevX with the datasheet or commissioning manual revision actually pulled from the manufacturer.

7. Request a tailored RFQ

Need a detector-specific version (model, firmware, sensitivity class)? Tradvolt can mirror this maintenance workflow against your OEM part numbers and target Notified Body evidence. Equipment references used in this guide (Hochiki ALN-EN(WHT) optical smoke detector under EN 54-7:2018 and Hochiki ACB-EW heat detector under EN 54-5:2017+A1:2018) are illustrative; the actual model, firmware, and commissioning manual revision will be confirmed at RFQ time.

8. FAQ

1. Is sensitivity calibration mandatory for every detector before export?

Pre-shipment verification of the analogue / drift-compensation value and a functional stimulus test is the practical gate. EN 54-5:2017+A1:2018 and EN 54-7:2018 do not prescribe a sampling rate per shipment — that is set by the manufacturer's FPC plan and the importer's quality agreement.

2. What is the AQL I should use?

Use the figure named in your supplier's FPC plan or quality agreement. There is no EN 54-mandated AQL; OEM datasheets (e.g. the Hochiki ALN-EN datasheet rev. 2024-04) usually state one for batch release.

3. Does the EU importer need the originals?

Yes. The DoP and CE marking must be supplied with the product (paper or PDF per CPR (EU) No 305/2011 Article 7), and the importer must keep copies on file for at least 10 years (Article 7(3) and Article 11(2)).

4. What about UKCA / Great Britain?

Separate regime. If the consignment also lands in GB, a UKCA mark and UK Declaration of Conformity are required in addition to the CE / DoP for the EU27 — see GOV.UK — placing construction products on the GB market.

5. What if a unit fails after install?

The serial number, batch ID and OEM firmware revision (e.g. Hochiki ESP firmware ≥ v3.4 on ALN-EN(WHT)) in this consignment file make the failure traceable back to the production date and the FPC records the OEM is required to retain.

6. What HS code should I declare?

PENDING — confirm via the EU TARIC consultation tool before customs filing. Do not assert a duty rate until the TARIC query is complete for the specific consignment.
