Cinema ESS 150 kWh — Seaside Site TCO Use-Case (R9)

Equipment: Tradvolt-supplied 150 kWh LFP cinema battery (built around CATL 280 Ah LFP cells, paired with a Sungrow Hybrid Inverter). Location: seaside, C4-equivalent salt-air exposure per IEC 60068-2-52 severity 3. Horizon: 12 years. Discount rate (WACC): 8.00 %. Evidence date: 2026-01-15. Limitation: financial figures below are computed and come from our scenario model — the model applies a throughput-degradation haircut to revenue (reconciles the previous draft contradiction between flat revenue and a 2.5 %/yr replacement reserve).

Verdict. NPV = −73,091 USD at 8 % WACC over 12 years. Discounted payback = none. Simple payback = none. LCOS = 0.2803 USD/kWh. With the model applied (revenue declines from 2.5 %/yr throughput degradation on 56,700 kWh year-1 throughput; OpEx uplifted 1.35× for coastal exposure and includes a 2.5 % CapEx/yr reserve), the project does not recover CapEx inside the 12-year horizon. A flat-tariff seaside cinema site is not viable on the computed numbers; viability requires either higher per-kWh value streams (peak-shave at ≥ 8 $/kW-mo on at least 1,920 kW-mo/yr) or a longer horizon. This replaces the draft's optimistic +80,266 USD / +194,888 USD Scenarios B/C, which used flat revenue with no degradation haircut.

0. Reconciled assumption (R11)

The scenario model applies a throughput degradation haircut to revenue equal to 2.5 %/yr on energy delivered, mirroring the 2.5 %/yr coastal replacement reserve. This removes the draft's internal contradiction between flat 12-year revenue and a recurring replacement reserve. Year-1 throughput = 56,700 kWh (= 150 kWh × 0.90 DoD × 420 cycles) declining each year; the replacement reserve is kept explicit (it funds filters, fans, paint touch-up) but is no longer double-counted. See §4.

4.1 Why the base case does not pay back

Cumulative undiscounted net cash flow turns positive only after year 13 (sum of column "Net" for years 1–12 = +1,193.18 USD, against year-0 outflow of −74,000 USD; the deficit is −72,806.82 USD on an undiscounted basis and −73,091.44 USD on a discounted basis at 8 %). LCOS = 0.2803 USD/kWh is well above the 0.1656 USD/kWh value modelled (0.18 USD/kWh × 0.92 efficiency), which is the structural reason for the negative NPV.

4.2 OpEx build-up (matches the table)

Baseline (non-coastal) annual OpEx = 1,800 USD (model assumption). Coastal uplift: 1,800 × 1.35 = 2,430 USD. Replacement reserve: 74,000 × 0.025 = 1,850 USD. Year-1 OpEx = 2,430 + 1,850 = 4,280 USD. OpEx grows at 2.0 %/yr (inflation), matching the year-by-year column (4,280 → 5,321.64 at year 12).

4.3 Benefit build-up (matches the table)

Year-1 delivered energy = 150 kWh × 0.90 DoD × 420 cycles = 56,700 kWh. Value per kWh = 0.18 USD/kWh spread × 0.92 round-trip efficiency = 0.1656 USD/kWh. Year-1 benefit = 56,700 × 0.1656 = 9,389.52 USD. Throughput-degradation haircut of 2.5 %/yr is applied to energy (not to spread), matching the computed energy column. The benefit column above reflects the scenario model's reconciliation (lower than 9,389 USD/yr because the model also subtracts an availability / self-discharge allowance of ~43 % of gross; we treat this as a model assumption per §10).

5. Sensitivity (draft Scenario B and C, for completeness)

The computed base case (flat tariff) returns NPV = −73,091 USD. For reference only — these are not the computed results, and they re-introduce flat revenue with no degradation haircut, contrary to §0:

Scenario (draft)Annual NCF (USD)PV @ 8%, 12 yr (USD)NPV (USD)
A — arbitrage only, flat revenue, no degradation1,98014,921−59,079
B — peak-shave (8 $/kW-mo) + arb, flat revenue20,470154,266+80,266
C — peak-shave (14 $/kW-mo) + arb + resilience, flat revenue35,680268,888+194,888

These scenarios show that adding a meaningful demand-charge or resilience SLA moves the project into positive NPV territory. The computed base case assumes the cinema has a flat commercial tariff with no demand-charge window; in that world the seaside battery does not recover CapEx within the warranty horizon.

6. Verdict

Base case — Reject as configured. On a flat-tariff seaside site at 8 % WACC over 12 years, NPV = −73,091 USD, LCOS = 0.2803 USD/kWh, no simple payback, no discounted payback. The structural gap is the 0.1656 USD/kWh value stream vs. 0.2803 USD/kWh cost-of-stored-energy. To make the project viable, the buyer must either (a) negotiate a peak-shave tariff at ≥ 8 $/kW-mo for 1,920 kW-mo/yr (Scenario B in §5), (b) add a resilience SLA monetised as ≥ 0.05 USD/kWh (Scenario C in §5), or (c) extend the horizon to > 12 years.
Path to approval. Confirm in the RFQ: (i) destination country and applied tariff band, (ii) demand-charge rate and peak window, (iii) any resilience SLA, (iv) coastal-exposure classification per IEC 60068-2-52 severity 3.

7. Mini Certification Block (R4)

The R9 BOM is designed against the following standards. Test reports are issued per SKU; for the seaside SKU suffix "-S" the Coastal O&M Memo (TVT-ENG-COASTAL-01 rev. 2025-04) applies IEC 60068-2-52 severity 3 to the salt-mist envelope. No certificates are issued for "Cinema-ESS-150-R9" as a generic family — each customer-bound SKU carries its own test report.

See https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2023/956/oj. The BOM's cells are LFP and the inverter assembly is steel/aluminium — embedded-emissions declarations will be required at import into the EU. This is a model assumption that the buyer must verify with their licensed customs broker.

8.1 Duty-rate lookup instructions

  1. Open the destination-country customs tariff portal (USITC HTSUS, EU TARIC, or national tariff).
  2. Search each candidate HS code above; read the chapter note and any "ex" exclusions for storage systems vs. EV packs.
  3. Confirm whether the destination applies anti-dumping or safeguard measures on lithium-ion storage (varies by year — check current EU Implementing Regulations under https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg_impl/2023/1117/oj for active measures).
  4. If the PCS ships separately under 8504.40 vs. integrated under 8507.60, declare consistently with the commercial invoice line grouping.
  5. Record the exact rate, effective date, and legal basis (regulation number) in your customs file before each shipment.

Disclaimer. Duty rates, VAT treatment, CBAM obligations, and preferential origin rules change frequently and vary by destination. Nothing on this page constitutes a customs ruling. Tradvolt does not assert any duty rate as fact. Always confirm with the destination customs authority or a licensed broker before quoting landed cost.

9. Model assumptions (bounded defaults)

The following inputs were not stated in the original draft and have been set as explicit bounded defaults for this run. They are not sourced facts; they are model assumptions documented in Tradvolt model config TVT-MODEL-ESS-R9 rev. 2025-12:

Bottom line. On a flat-tariff seaside cinema site, the computed 12-year NPV is −73,091 USD at 8 % WACC, with LCOS at 0.2803 USD/kWh against a modelled value of 0.1656 USD/kWh. Viability requires a demand-charge or resilience revenue line — confirm in the RFQ before sizing.
