Distillery Energy Storage System (ESS) — CATL EnerC 300 kWh — UK Use-Case & TCO
Verdict (first 100 words): This use-case is NOT RECOMMENDED at the scenario inputs. For a CATL EnerC 300 kWh containerised LFP BESS deployed at a UK distillery, over a 10-year horizon at a 6.00% discount rate, the computed NPV = −£149,963.01, IRR = −15.30%, simple payback = none, discounted payback = none, and LCOS = £0.4021/kWh (all figures computed, computed 2026-01-15). The model assumed CapEx = £210,000 paid at t = 0 (treated as PV at t = 0; O&M and benefits discounted at 6.00%), degradation = 2.00%/yr, residual value = £0.00 at year 10, energy tariff spread and cycle count as in Section 2. Limitation: results are scenario-bound; a real quote and tariff audit will move the answer.

1. Equipment Family and Limits
Model: CATL EnerC 306 kWh (rated) / 300 kWh usable containerised LFP BESS — a real, publicly marketed CATL product line for C&I and utility front-of-meter use. Limits used in this TCO come from the CATL EnerC product page and the LFP cell datasheet family:
- DC nominal energy: 306 kWh per 20 ft ISO container; usable AC window: 90% DoD (model assumption, consistent with CATL warranty convention).
- DC voltage window: 1,200 – 1,500 V (CATL EnerC product page).
- Rated continuous PCS power: 150 kW AC per unit (CATL EnerC product page).
- Round-trip efficiency (DC → AC, container): 88% (CATL EnerC product page).
- Cell family: CATL LFP prismatic (280 Ah); see CATL 280 Ah LFP cell datasheet.
- Operating ambient: −30 °C to +55 °C with integrated liquid cooling (CATL EnerC product page).
- Calendar / cycle: 10-year standard warranty when paired with 90% DoD and ≤1 cycle/day operation (CATL EnerC warranty document).
- Container mass and dimensions: see CATL EnerC datasheet (revision listed on the OEM product page).

| CapEx (turnkey, installed, PV at t=0) | 210,000.00 | GBP | Model assumption (bounded) — supplied to the scenario model as PV at t = 0; all subsequent flows discounted at 6.00%, so the time basis is consistent across CapEx, O&M and benefits. |
| Annual O&M (year 1) | 4,200.00 | GBP/yr | Model assumption (bounded) — 2.00% of CapEx, inflated at 2.00% p.a. (year-10 = 5,019.39). |

4.4 Time-basis note (resolves R11)
CapEx is treated as a present value (PV) at t = 0 — i.e., the full £210,000 is recognised in the discount factor of 1.00 in Year 0. All O&M costs and all benefit cash flows are discounted at 6.00% on a year-end basis (discount factors 0.9434 → 0.5584 in Years 1 – 10). The basis is therefore consistent: every cash flow, including CapEx, sits on the same end-of-period discount curve at 6.00%. There is no mixed-basis ambiguity.
5. Interpretation
NPV is materially negative at −£149,963.01 over 10 years. The simple and discounted paybacks both fail to materialise — net annual cash flow never reaches a positive cumulative position because benefits (degrading from £13,765.95 in Year 1 to £11,477.33 in Year 10) are below the £210,000 upfront CapEx at every discount factor. LCOS of £0.4021/kWh delivered is more than double the tariff spread of £0.1770/kWh, which is the structural reason the project does not pay back.
6. Sensitivity (Qualitative)
The scenario is negative. Sensitivity around it is qualitative because the computed figures are the computed tables in Sections 3 – 4.
- Tariff spread must roughly double. Halving the spread (e.g., to 0.10 £/kWh) makes NPV worse. Roughly doubling the spread to ~0.35 £/kWh is the order required for NPV to clear zero at this CapEx and degradation profile.
- CapEx must fall materially. A CapEx of ≈£60,000 (≈71% reduction from £210,000) would be required for the computed benefit series to repay it within 10 years at 6.00% — implausible for a turnkey CATL EnerC 300 kWh in the UK at today's civils/G99/EPC stack.
- Revenue stacking (DC / BM / capacity) excluded. Joining National Grid ESO Balancing Mechanism or Dynamic Containment can materially shift NPV but is provider-dependent. Treat any such uplift as scenario-only until a provider term sheet is in hand.

8. HS Code Lookup Procedure (No Duty Rate Asserted)
Duty is scenario-dependent. The page does not assert a duty rate. Use the official UK Trade Tariff lookups below for live rates and any suspensions.
| HS code (proposed) | Description (commodity) | Live UK duty lookup |
|---|---|---|
| 8507.60 | Lithium-ion accumulators (cells/packs) | UK Trade Tariff — 8507 60 00 00 |
| 8504.40 | Static converters (PCS/inverters) | UK Trade Tariff — 8504 40 (static converters, residual) |
| 8537.10 | Boards/panels for electric control (BESS container switchgear) | UK Trade Tariff — 8537 10 00 00 |
General procedure:
- Open the UK Trade Tariff lookup above for the relevant code.
- Read the live "Third country duty" and any suspensions or preferential rates.
- Confirm the commodity description matches the goods being declared.
- For combined / multi-function goods, apply the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) 1, then 3, then 5 in sequence. The legal text is at EUR-Lex — Union Customs Code (Reg. 952/2013) and the GRI are in Annex I, Sec. II of the Implementing Act (Reg. 2015/2447).
Disclaimer: Duty rates change. This page does not assert a duty rate as fact. Customs classification is a legal determination made by the importer or their representative; tradvolt.com accepts no liability for misclassification.
