Maintenance & Process Guide — BMS CAN Bus Termination, CN→US Corridor

Verdict — applied equipment, location, horizon and limitation: This SOP applies to the Pylontech US5000 and CATL BC-L R150 families of Battery Management Systems (BMS), sourced from the People's Republic of China and commissioned in the United States under the CN→US corridor workflow. Maintenance visit horizon is a single site attendance (~3 h). Limitation: this is a procedure document, not a procurement price list; cost values are unfilled slots, and the HS/duty/EAR rows are PENDING lookup against the live USITC HTS, CBP CSMS messages, and the EAR Commerce Control List.

1. Scope and applicability

This guide applies to the Pylontech US5000 and CATL BC-L R150 families of lithium-ion Battery Management Systems that communicate between battery modules, the master BMS, and the inverter or gateway over a CAN 2.0B bus. Equipment is assumed assembled in the People's Republic of China and commissioned in the United States under a CN→US corridor workflow that includes US Customs and Border Protection entry filing and, where applicable, UL 1973 listed subassemblies (see UL 1973 standard page on UL Shop Standards).

7. FAQ

7.1 Why are exactly two terminators required?

A CAN bus is a multi-drop differential bus. Termination prevents signal reflections at the two physical ends of the cable. With exactly two 120 Ω resistors in parallel, the measured end-to-end value is approximately 60 Ω. A third or fourth resistor lowers the impedance below the bus driver specification, increases loading, and degrades the recessive-to-dominant edge. The differential recessive ~2.5 V / dominant ~2 V levels are specified in ISO 11898-2:2016 (cite by number, edition and year via the ISO catalogue).

7.2 What does a reading of approximately 120 Ω tell me?

It indicates that only one terminator is present, or that one of the two terminators has an open joint. Reflections at the un-terminated end will produce ringing on the differential waveform and intermittent bus-off states. Replace or add the missing 120 Ω terminator so the bus returns to approximately 60 Ω. Source: ISO 11898-2:2016 (cite by number, edition and year via the ISO catalogue).

7.3 Can I leave the bus un-terminated on a short cable?

Cables below approximately 1 m may appear to function without termination at low baud rates, but the OEM manual requires termination regardless of cable length — see Pylontech US5000 UM rev 1.3 §5.2 and CATL BC-L R150 CM rev 1.1 §6.1.

7.4 Does CAN termination relate to UL 1973 or UL 9540?

CAN termination is a signal-integrity matter and is not directly listed in UL 1973 — Batteries for Use in Stationary and Motive Auxiliary Power Applications (see UL 1973 standard page) or in UL 9540 (cite by designation and edition on the UL Shop Standards catalogue). An un-terminated CAN bus that drops the BMS off-line can defeat the protection chain that those standards evaluate, so termination remains in scope of any commissioned system.

7.5 Where do I find the CBP entry reference for the BMS?

US Customs and Border Protection issues an Entry Summary at the port of entry (CBP trade topics are reachable from the CBP home page). The entry summary contains the manufacturer, the HTS numbers, and the value declared at entry. Keep a copy against the BMS serial range for traceability.

8. HS / duty block (PENDING — live lookup required at filing)

Battery Management Systems are classified by US Customs and Border Protection and by the World Customs Organization. The HS code, duty rate, and any Section 301 action against the People's Republic of China of origin are PENDING lookup against the live USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule search and live CBP CSMS messages at filing time. Treat the figures below as placeholders until confirmed.
